Marieke (The Netherlands), who I had gone with to Addo Elephant National Park, had also been planning a service project at the Masikhule care center where she volunteers. They were going to be doing some renovations and painting. In the lingo of Projects Abroad, this is called a Dirty Weekend.
I only went the second day, but it was wonderful to see the work being done. It was also great to see how much Marieke cared for the center and the children it served. When I went, I did mostly painting, but the project also included re-tiling some of the rooms and fixing up some of the walls. They had already done a fair amount of work on the first day.
On the second day, we continued their work and made good progress!
Some of the paint "accidentally" ended up on a few folks...and then "accidentally" on a few other folks. :p
At the end of the day of work, we took a group photo and left a signature of hands.
I did not go the third day, but as I understand they put all the furniture back into the room. You can sure see the difference made!
Needless to say, I was glad to have been able to help out with the Dirty Weekend.
